Raidboxes team

Do you want to know more about our gold sponsor RAIDBOXES? We asked the Johannes, one of the founders of RAIDBOXES a few questions!

How did RAIDBOXES get started?

We started RAIDBOXES out of our WordPress agency business in 2016, where Torben and I were building WordPress websites for small and medium enterprises. Back then, we used an American web hosting company to host our customers’ websites. We always had a bad feeling to tell our clients that their websites are hosted in the U.S. but we wanted to focus on what we do best (at the time it was creating websites 😉 ) and did not want to spend too much time installing and managing several WordPress websites.

This is why we created RAIDBOXES: To save WordPress professionals in Europe valuable time and a lot of hassle when developing and managing their websites while at the same time ensuring high data protection standards and stellar performance.

What lessons were learned since the start of the company?

The most important lesson that we learned during our first years is the value of exceptional support. Our median reaction time is around five minutes. This is something that most people do not expect. Therefore, we can exceed customer expecations, which leads to a lot of word of mouth recommendations. Today still 70 percent of new customers come to us by some kind of recommendation. Hence, we can recommend to every new company to exceed expectations in this field.

How does WordPress benefit your company?

Since we are a specialized hoster for WordPress websites, WordPress is the heart of our core business. We basically live and breathe WordPress and wouldn’t be where we are today without it. This is why we contribute to the communtiy whenever we can. For instance by sponsoring WordCamps and Meetups and generally encouraging every team member to contribute to the community in their own way. Our Head of Development Matthias, for example, is involved in the global WP hosting community, has contributed to WP core and is part of the organizing team for WordCamp Retreat Soltau 2020. Our Content & Social Media Manager Leefke and I were in the organizing team of the first WordCamp Osnabrück this year (… we might already be planning the next #WCOS but psst!). Leefke also loves to support WordCamps as a volunteer.

How diverse is your company? What do you do to improve it?

If you define diversity based on gender, we unfortuntately aren’t very diverse at all – yet. This is something we are actively trying to change now that RAIDBOXES is growing faster. We have a few open positions that we are trying to fill at the moment, but the fact that the IT sector is not very diverse itself, makes our way towards gender diversity a difficult task.
Besides gender diversity, we also understand that each individual is unique and has their own needs. This is something that is very important in our company culture. The fact that we use Holacracy as our organisational framework perfectly caters to everybody’s individual needs and skills while at the same time making sure the hierarchy is as flat as possible.

What’s your favorite thing you are working on right now inside your company?

In our RAIDBOXES Dashboard there is an area where our customers can suggest and vote for new features. At the moment, our dev team is working on evaluating, selecting and implementing those features that were requested the most. This is a project dear to our heart since we are able to provide small as well as big features that our customers actively asked for and that will improve their workflow. I am not allowed to reveal too much yet but among the most requested features are multisite support, CDN, WMPL with multi-domains as well as automatic notifications when there’s a reported plugin vulnerability.

One more thing: If you’re a web designer, you can join our FREE DEV program. This means that you can develop your WordPress projects for free until you transfer them to your clients. You will receive up to €1,500 commission for each newly recruited RAIDBOXES customer.
